Looking back on an exciting year at BC Place

BC Place is proud to welcome guests from around the world to sporting events, concerts, consumer shows, community gatherings and special events each year. Here is a look back on some of our most memorable moments from 2018:

January

Vancouver International Boat Show

The year kicked off with the return of Western Canada's largest boat show. The event is known for its impressive lineup of the newest and most innovative boats and accessories from over 250 exhibitors, along with entertaining and informative seminars.

Rugby World Cup Qualifier - Canada vs. Uruguay

Canada’s Men’s Rugby Team faced Uruguay in a Rugby World Cup 2019 qualifying match at BC Place on Saturday, January 27th. Over 16,000 rugby fans were in attendance as Uruguay went on to beat Canada 38-29.

February

BC Home & Garden Show

BC Place hosted the 2018 BC Home & Garden Show in February. The 5-day event featured over 425 trusted brands and local companies, including the industry’s top home improvement celebrities and local designers.

March

HSBC Canada Sevens

The HSBC Canada Sevens tournament returned to BC Place on March 10th and 11th for the 6th leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series. The 2018 2-day tournament drew a record attendance of over 77,000 fans to the stadium. Tickets for 2019 HSBC Canada Sevens can be purchased here.

PlayDome

PlayDome, Western Canada’s largest indoor carnival, took over BC Place during spring break. The 2018 event featured over 45 rides and games for the whole family to enjoy.

Vancouver Whitecaps 2018 Season Kick-Off

Vancouver Whitecaps FC kicked off the season with a 2-1 win over Canadian rivals Montreal Impact at BC Place on Sunday, March 4th.

April

Vancouver Sun Run 2018

BC Place was the host venue for the 34th annual Vancouver Sun Run. Nearly 42,000 runners took part in the 2018 event, which concluded at the stadium.

May

Canucks Autism Network Sports Day

BC Place welcomed players and staff from the Vancouver Canucks, BC Lions Football Club, Vancouver Whitecaps FC and Vancouver Canadians to share the field with local children, teens and young adults living with autism.

Kids Play Foundation Super Soccer Tournament

BC Place was proud to host hundreds of local kids for Kids Play's Super Soccer Tournament. The goal of the non-competitive event is to engage inner-city youth by providing a unique experience, which in turn leads to developing a connection with youth at an early age and encourage positive mentorship.

Insurance Brokers of BC Gala

BC Place served as venue for the Insurance Brokers of British Columbia 2018 Gala. The stadium was transformed into an intimate banquet space, which included a performance from Grammy-Award winner Sarah McLachlan.

June

BC Lions 2018 Season Kick-Off

The BC Lions kicked off the season at home with a 22-10 win over the Montreal Alouettes on Saturday, June 16th.

Luxury Home & Design Show

BC Place held the Luxury Home & Design Show in June. The event was celebration of luxury and craftsmanship from the globe’s most innovative artisans.

July

Canada Day

Whitecaps FC played their first-ever Canada Day match at BC Place on July 1st. Before watching the 'Caps take on the Colorado Rapids, 60 immigrants became Canadian citizens during a special citizenship ceremony at the stadium.

Tackle Hunger

BC Place and Centerplate staff teamed up with the BC Lions on Saturday, July 14th to help raise over 22,000 pounds of food for Vancouver and Surrey Food Banks through the Purolator Tackle Hunger program.

August

CW's The Flash

Did you know BC Place is a popular location for film shoots? Most recently, the stadium was the setting for a superhero showdown on the hit show, The Flash. Filming took place in the summer, with the episode airing at the end of October. Check out the clip below!

September

Indigenous Sport Gallery

BC Place was proud to support the BC Sports Hall of Fame for the unveiling of the Indigenous Sport Gallery. The permanent exhibit celebrates the rich history and many contributions to sport by First Nations and Metis athletes, teams, coaches, builders and volunteers in British Columbia.

Whitecaps FC Legends & Stars Charity Match

BC Place hosted the annual Whitecaps FC Legends & Stars match in September, benefitting BC Children’s Hospital. This year’s event featured former Vancouver Canucks Henrik and Daniel Sedin, as well as stars from hit shows including Riverdale and The 100.

October

Jay-Z & Beyoncé's "OTR II" Tour

GRAMMY-Award winners Jay-Z and Beyoncé brought their highly-anticipated "OTR II" tour to BC Place on Tuesday, October 2nd. The concert was described as, "a spectacle – a feast for the senses, if you will – and one of the most stunning live entertainment experiences ever produced."

Luke Bryan's "What Makes You Country" Tour

Country music superstar Luke Bryan, with special guests Sam Hunt, Jon Pardi and Carly Pearce performed at BC Place on Saturday, October 13th. The show was one of the biggest country music concerts to ever take place in Vancouver.

November

Thank you, Wally

The BC Lions closed their season at home with a touching tribute to head coach and CFL legend, Wally Buono. The now-retired BC Lions head coach spent 46 years with the league as a player, coach, general manager and as a governor.

Take Our Kids to Work Day

BC Place is a proud participant of Take Our Kids to Work Day, an annual career exploration event where Grade 9 students across Canada spend the day in the life of a working professional. This year, 14-year-old Domenique got a behind-the-scenes look at the operations of the stadium on November 14th.

BC High School Football Championships - SUBWAY Bowl

BC Place is proud to host the BC High School Football Championships each year. The SUBWAY Bowl is an incredible, inspirational opportunity for young football talent from across British Columbia to compete on the same stage as their sporting heroes.

CONTACT Winter Music Festival

Returning to BC Place for the seventh consecutive year, CONTACT showcases international EDM superstars and provides the opportunity for rising stars and local artists to shine on the same stage. The 2018 headliners include Grammy-Award winning artist Skrillex and chart-topping duo The Chainsmokers.

BC Place helps "Lights of Hope" shine

WHAT IS LIGHTS OF HOPE?

The St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation’s “Lights of Hope” is an annual fundraising campaign to raise money for patient care, research and equipment at St. Paul’s Hospital. The campaign has raised over $34 million for the Foundation over the past 20 years, including an incredible $3.1 million in 2017. The dazzling display has turned into an annual tradition which brings thousands of visitors to downtown Vancouver throughout the holiday season.

BC PLACE’S INVOLVEMENT

Dozens of Lights of Hope volunteers descended upon BC Place back in September, using the stadium’s vast open spaces to untangle and organize more than 10 kilometres of lights. The gigantic display takes over 6 weeks to construct, featuring over 100,000 bulbs and other donated materials. BC Place is proud to support this community initiative by donating a space for the campaign volunteers to work on the displays!

BC Place gives back during the holiday season

December 10th, 2018

BC Place and Centerplate staff celebrated the 2018 holiday season by giving back to the community on Sunday night. Over $3,200 was donated to programs benefiting at-risk youth, while 20 boxes of non-perishable food items were collected for the food bank.

Aunt Leah's Trees

By purchasing centerpieces through Aunt Leah's Trees, BC Place is proud to have contributed $1755 towards funding programs that help foster youth who are at risk of homelessness and mothers in need.

For over 20 years Aunt Leah’s Christmas Tree Lots have been raising money to fund programs that help prevent children in foster care from becoming homeless, and young mothers from losing custody of their children. To learn more, visit www.auntleahs.org/social-enterprise/tree-lots.

Kids Up Front Foundation

A 50/50 raffle raised $1460 for Kids Up Front Vancouver.

The Kids Up Front Foundation provides entertainment, educational and recreational opportunities to children through the distribution of unused tickets and by creating special events that help to heal, bond and unite. For more information, visit www.kidsupfrontvancouver.com.

Greater Vancouver Food Bank

BC Place and Centerplate staff collected over 20 boxes full of non-perishable food items to donate to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank provides assistance to over 27,500 people weekly. Of that group, 44% are children and seniors. To learn more, visit www.foodbank.bc.ca.
