Temporary stadium facts

  • Temporary outdoor stadium is complete and ready for first BC Lions home game vs. Edmonton Eskimos on Sunday, June 20th. BC Lions will play all of their 2010 CFL homegames at the stadium
  • Vancouver Whitecaps FC will open their inaugural MLS season in 2011 with their first homegames at the site
  • Location: Empire Fields, at east end of Pacific National Exhibition (PNE), previous site of Empire Stadium
  • Total capacity: 27,500
  • Number of private boxes: 12 (each can accommodate 18 guests)
  • Builder: Nussli Special Events (Canada). Cost to build temporary stadium: $14 million
  • All costs related to temporary stadium are covered by PavCo’s operational budget
  • Assembly period: 111 days from first arriving on site, to Sunday’s kickoff
  • Average number of workers onsite during construction: 40-50

Stadium structure

  • Scaffolding materials used: enough to fill 160 40-foot containers
  • Reusable rental material:1,000 tonnes (2.2 million pounds)
  • Number of single pieces:125,000
  • Ballast and counterweight system: 550 lock blocks weighing 1,100 tonnes (2.4 million pounds)
  • Area of roof structure: 6,200 square metres (67,000 square feet)
  • Exterior siding: 15,800 square metres (170,000 square feet) of fabric mesh cladding

Turf

  • AstroTurf GT, built to FIFA standards and will remain at Empire Fields following eventualdismantling of temporary stadium
  • Area: 9,600 square metres
  • Installation time: record 10 days, installation by Astroturf West Distributors in Vancouver
  • More than one trillion grass blades, consisting of extruded Polyethylene monofilament2
  • Infill: 800,000 pounds including silica sand and more than 346,000 pounds of crumb rubberfrom recycled tires. Ground up crumb rubber equivalent to the rubber from 22,450 tires wassupplied by Western Rubber Products of North Delta
  • Backing: soybean-based polyurethane

LED Video board

  • Display Area: 4.8meters high x 8.6 meters wide (15 feet, 9 inches x 28 feet, 4 inches)
  • Aspect ratio: 16:9, capable of displaying standard and high definition video
  • Total weight (screen and frame): 8,000 Kilos

Game Scoreboards

  • Display area: 2.4 meters high x 5.5 meters wide (8' x 18')
  • Weight: 180 kilos each
  • Control software for both football and soccer

Lighting

  • Four main lighting towers, each one 33 metres (100 feet) tall; plus supplementary lighting on grandstands
  • Minimum light level:1200 Lux (111 footcandles) to allow games to be played at night
  • Four tower lighting system will remain at Empire Fields following eventual dismantling of temporary stadium

Broadcast Production

  • Capacity: Up to three mobile production trucks
