February 28th, 2012

Vancouver, B.C: The 36-foot tall Northern Lights Display at BC Place will be illuminated “pink” on Wednesday, February 29th in support of “Pink Shirt Day”, an anti-bullying campaign started five years ago by two High School students.

The event was initiated in Nova Scotia by two grade 12 students and their teenage friends who organized a high-school protest to wear pink in sympathy with a Grade 9 boy who was being bullied. The students took a stand against bullying when they protested against the harassment of a new Grade 9 student by distributing pink T-shirts to all the boys in their school.

Pink Shirt Day has grown organically since its inception. BC Place is proud to show our support for the “Bullying Stops Here” by illuminating in a wash of pink.

About the “Northern Lights Display” at BC Place
The stadium roof façade – known as the Northern Lights Display - utilizes 1700 ‘ETFE’ panels, stacked four rows high, and 6,800 linear feet of energy-efficient LED lights to create customizable lighting displays. ETFE is a semi-transparent material that allows sunlight into the stadium during the day, but it also contains metal dots called “frits” that reflect the LED light displays at night. Together with the new 38,000 square metre roof at BC Place roof, the Northern Lights Display enables a wide range of both static and dynamic programming, with a total of more than 26,000 addressable lighting elements.
