Vancouver, BC (April 3, 2012): BC Place and Lumenpulse Inc. have been recognized for “Most Creative Use of Colour” by the 2012 Architectural SSL Product Innovation Awards, for the facility’s new “Northern Lights Display”. Architectural SSL is the leading publication in the field of architectural lighting.

BC Place lighting designers C.M. Kling & Associates utilized the translucent 36-foot tall ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) façade, installed as part of the revitalization of BC Place, to create a vast 360-degree media screen, animated by coloured light from Lumenpulse’s Lumenfacade LED linear projectors. The façade works in sync with a roof that uses Lumenbeam projectors to create a complete colour changing lighting system.

The new lighting design allows BC Place to join other famous sites around the world including the Empire State Building, CN Tower, Great Buddha in Japan, Niagara Falls, and the Sydney Opera House in illuminating to promote significant events. BC Place recently partnered with community and charitable organizations such as ‘Pink Shirt’ day to create awareness for anti-bullying, red for AIDS awareness, purple for Epilepsy awareness day and blue for World Autism Awareness Day.

Lumenpulse also recently won a prestigious “red dot” international design award for the Lumenbeam LBX - one of the projectors used to light the stadium roof. The “red dot” design award dates back to 1955, and is one of the world's largest, and most distinguished, design competitions. Lumenpulse’s entry was selected by a 30-member expert jury after evaluating 4,515 designs -- a record-number of submissions. The “red dot” competition is hotly contested by manufacturers from all fields of industrial design including makers of cars, computers and furniture.

The sophisticated “Northern Lights Display” at the new BC Place utilizes Lumenpulse’s energy-efficient LED light projector system to illuminate more than nine acres of roof, the clear façade panels on the side of the building, and the roof’s support masts – all of which provide an incredible canvas for lighting the stadium at night.

The stadium roof façade (or clerestory), just beneath the outer edge of the new roof, utilizes 1700 ‘ETFE’ panels, stacked four rows high, and 6,800 linear feet of energy-efficient LED lights to create customizable lighting displays. ETFE is a semi-transparent material that allows sunlight into the stadium during the day, and is also embedded with thousands of tiny metal dots called “frits” that reflect the light from the LED displays, allowing BC Place to become a glowing landmark that can be seen far and wide after dark. Together, the new BC Place roof and the Northern Lights Display enable a wide range of both static and dynamic programming, with more than 26,000 individual programmable lighting elements.
