Vancouver, BC (May 16, 2012): The revitalization of BC Place has achieved international recognition by being awarded “Project of the Year” at the international Stadium Business Awards last night (May 15) in Turin, Italy.

The Stadium Business Awards recognize achievements in the stadium industry across the globe in 18 categories. The “Project of The Year” award is presented to an expansion, modernization or major capital enhancement of an existing sporting venue that has delivered on all its project goals and more.

The new BC Place, designed by Stantec Architecture’s team in Vancouver, was selected from a shortlist of five stadium projects nominated in the ‘Project of the Year’ category, including the Metricon Stadium redevelopment in Australia, and three separate projects from Britain, including renovations at Old Trafford, home to Manchester United Football Club.

“We’re pleased that the thousands of people who worked hard to create the new BC Place are receiving the recognition they deserve,” said Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Minister Pat Bell. “Being selected for this award from a list of high calibre finalists from around the world underlines the fact that BC Place has been transformed into one of the world’s top venues, and is worthy of worldwide acknowledgement for it.”

“Stantec is proud to have brought our expertise to the BC Place revitalization and this international award is testament to the hard work that went into it,” said Laurenz Kosichek, project architect at Stantec in Vancouver. “This recognition further elevates the reputation of BC Place within our province and across the globe.”

“Congratulations to everyone who reached the podium,” added Ian Nuttall, founder of The Stadium Business Awards. “Winners included our industry’s leaders, achievers and standout venues, who should all be immensely proud of their achievements.”
