CONTEST WINNER ADDS ‘CAPS EXPERIENCE TO A LIFETIME OF MEMORIES AT BC PLACE
Derek’s story showcased in 30th Anniversary presentation booklet.
Vancouver, BC: Derek Williams was all smiles as he made his debut at BC Place on Sunday, alongside the Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
As the grand prize winner of BC Place’s 30th anniversary contest, Derek, from Surrey, added the ‘Caps experience to a lifetime of memories created at the stadium.
BC Place recently celebrated its 30th anniversary milestone by inviting British Columbians to share their favourite experiences from events during the last 30 years. Hundreds of stories were submitted, including memories of visiting the original construction site in 1982, welcoming the world for the ceremonies of the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and seeing Michael Jackson live in concert. A special presentation booklet capturing these memories and commemorating the anniversary is available for viewing or download on the BC Place website.
Derek’s winning entry was sharing his experience of enjoying the BC Lions as a 5 year-old with his father: “That is where my love of football and love for the Lions started”, he recalls. “I was only five but my Dad taught me all about the game and the players. Since then I have played for my high school football team and my dad took days off work just to see the team play.”
B.C. Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Todd Stone passed on his congratulations to Derek Williams for winning the contest and said, “This contest shows that BC Place has created and continues to create many lifelong, happy memories for British Columbians. It’s also a world-class facility that hosts everything from international performers to local events. Here’s to many more great memories!”
Bob Lenarduzzi, President of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, commented, “When you think of big events in Vancouver, BC Place is almost always the venue that comes to mind. Since that first Whitecaps win over the Seattle Sounders in 1983, we’ve gone on to see many exceptional and historic events at BC Place, and we look forward to seeing many more.”
